Aagre spiller under Oslo Innovation Week

Release of Aagres composition Gloria (choir and sax)

news-Gloria-aug-2014Gloria in Excelsis Deo – the song of the angels announcing Christ’s birth – given here in a powerful version, simple and beautiful, for choir and saxophone by Norwegian composer Frøy Aagre. At times deeply meditative, at times sparkling with energy, this is a Gloria with roots in both the classical and jazz traditions. Frøy Aagre and the choir Schola Cantorum with their conductor Tone Bianca Sparre Dahl are all artists who make a point of trying to communicate directly with an audience. In this audio production from 2L, the listener seems to be among the players. This makes for a very special listening experience – you are captivated by the music’s vitality and calm in Uranienborg Church, and by Frøy Aagre’s expressive saxophone that provides the linear storytelling impetus to the music.

Article in Kenyan newspaper The People

Music changes the shape and power of the brain.

«Music is truly a language understood the world over».  Article by Nina Hanssen

«…This week I had this great experience and longing for my father when I listened to acclaimed Norwegian saxophonist Frøy Aagre. She is a great musician whose performance touches my heart, with her powerful compositions and style making her a special person. Aagre is one of the leading saxophonists of Norway, playing tenor and soprano with an individual sound.
I have her album at home, but to listen to her live is a great and energising experience, especially because she is always in the state of flow when performing. Flow is a mental state of operation in which a person performing an activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energised focus, full involvement, and enjoyment in the process.

In essence, flow is characterised by complete absorption in what one does. I talked to Aagre before and after her performance. She was fully concentrated and focused before and happy after. It was a magical moment…»

Konsert med Stabsmusikken på Akershus Festning

news_stabsmusikken_feb_2014

Stabsmusikken markerer 200-års jubileet for Adolphe Sax ved å sette saxofonen i fokus.

Gode kritikker by:Larm

http://www.osloby.no/oslopuls/musikk/–Mer-trokk-7121233.html

-Anmeldelse Jazz i Norge:

Strings created perfect harmony

Be it the conversation, Restless, played to perfection along with son Ambi, or jamming with Froy Aagre on the saxophone, the maestro knew how to keep the audience engaged. Few in the city have seen a performance where the musician uses multiple bows to play the violin once the conversation reaches a crescendo. DSR Murti was a delight on the mridangam. So was Preetam Koilpillai on the piano. «This is a privilege for me, I hope you like this,» said Froy, before her solo number, You and me, on the sax. And when she was joined by Bindu with her jazz number, Baby I am a fool, it was sheer magic.

Kavita Krishnamurti Subramanian is well-loved in the city ”the loud applause as she took to the stage was testimony to this as was the warm reception after she rendered the Meera bhajan, Jo tum toro piya, mein na tore and her malhar-based song, Badal barse. The young and always smiling Ambi was a treat. Be it his playing in sync with Alwyn Fernandes on the guitar or being in perfect musical harmony with Sathyasai on the morsing, the lad surely impressed all. His solo, Watch your step, was proof of his musical talent. A dream-like lull followed as L Subramaniam performed his number, Walking in a dream. Bad miss for those who couldn’t make it to the concert!

Oslo Kulturnatt - Nasjonal Jazzscene 14.9 kl 20. Karl Johans gate 35. Gratis inngang!

Concert Crossroads and album recording at IsitArt

Played a concert at Crossroads Club, Oslo June 16th. Wonderful venue and really nice audience. Such a great atmosphere. The last play concert  before heading off to the studio. We drove right after the concert, instead of getting up extremely early. It was 2 hours drive and we encountered three foxes, a deer, a moose, a badger and a porcupine. What an adventouous journey at night. Arrived early in the morning to this amazingly quiet and picturesque place by a lake in the middle of the Swedish woords. We had very inspiring days at IsItArt Studio recording the new album. The perfect surroundings for making music.

Boisdale JazzFM show in London June 13th

This week we played a concert in London, at the Boisdale Canary Wharf, presented by Jazz FM. The concert was broadcasted on Jazz FM the following Tuesday.

It was wonderful to be back in London. Even though it´s more than 10 years since I lived there I got right back into the London mode. On the Underground, I read a book, listen to music or just look at the underground map. When up on the street, I walk in a faster walking pace than in Oslo, and I don´t look at anyone. What I love the most with England is the British sense of humor, the people and the pub culture. I get right back into it, as if I still live there.

The venue, Boisdale is situated in Canary Wharf, financial district. That´s an area I have never been to, and it was very different from other parts of the city. Very open, lots of air, tall, big buildings. It could have been anywhere in the world, didn´t have the London characteristics. The venue was quite posh with timeless interior, nice stage, amazing food and a beautiful backstage room. The Jazz FM people were real friendly and I enjoyed the concert.

Being just two in the band leaves us so much space and so many possibilities. Andreas and I have a special connection, having played together for 9 years, and it is so exciting to play together in a totally new context. I have had my acoustic quartet for 10 years and now and this new project is an electric duo with Rhodes with effects, electronics and bass pedals. I write different music for this duo, developing my style with new influences from other genres and bands like Radiohead, Kate Bush, Bon Iver and Steve Reich.

Usually, on tour, you don´t normally have time to have a look around the city. The schedule is tight and if you have some spear time, you normally choose to sleep or relax, to get the amount of rest required. I didn´t expect to get any time to explore the city this time, as we arrived late and left noon the following day. But luckily I woke up early the morning and went out for a stroll in the streets of London. It was bright blue sky, nice and hot. First I started off walking my favorite streets of central London. The places I know. My plan was to walk to Green Park, then off to St. James Park and back. But then I decided to make a new version of London. I´m no longer a music student in my early twenties and I realized that I should try to make a new version of London, that match my life and my preferences today. If not, London is merely connected to the past, and not the present time in my life. Also, with such a big city as London you can, make a new version that match your preferences at different stages in life. So I just walked on my impulses. Once I found a street that looked interesting, an inviting park, a nice square, I walked there. That way, I discovered new places, so different than the places I normally go, yet, so close distant wise. Intriguing. I´m really looking forward to my next trip to London, to continue exploring.

Aagre representerer Norge i Nisses hörna

Concert Garana Jazz Festival, Romania July 23rd

Hidden in the heart of the Western Carpathians, the small village of Garana, —also called Wolfsberg by the Bohemian colonists who have inhabited it until some 30 years ago—has developed, during the last decades, into an international artist colony—hosting, for the 15th time this year, Europe’s only open-air jazz festival, a kind of contemporary Woodstock. Instead of diminishing its appeal, the capricious climate and the special location seem to increase the ambition of the participants to belong to the «chosen,» if not few, ones. Throughout its relatively short history, the festival has featured an impressive lineup of high-class artists —including Eberhard Weber, Mike Stern, Jan Garbarek, Charles Lloyd, and Nils Petter Molvaer—becoming one of the most significant musical events of its kind, attended by thousands of jazz lovers who travel each summer to the mountains, ignoring the risk of rain and the chilly nights.

Review: Frøy Aagre Quartet:
The second refreshing surprise of the festival, Frøy Aagre Quartet, with pianist Andreas Ulvo, bassist Jo Fougner Skansaar and percussionist Freddy Wike, opened the third night on a light, clear note. In masterful command of her instrument, the young Norwegian saxophonist and composer added a crisp, lyrical touch to the Nordic jazz musical landscape, creating an airy atmosphere of high-tuned playfulness. The counterpointed dialogue with the drums on pieces like «Factory» fueled a gentle drive, balanced later by more reflective themes marked by well-placed free jazz accents. A performance wonderfully sustained by Frøy’s charismatic stage presence.

Brilliant reviews in U.K, Germany and Australia

Guardian (UK): “Aagre’s composing leaves an impression that ripples on long after the disc has stopped spinning.”

Irish Times: (UK) “Aagre’s sound is gorgeous, pure, rounded, expressive and, like her writing, full of that very Scandinavian blend of melancholy and celebration” Matthew Halsall
www.irishtimes.com

Kultur zeitschrift (DE): ” Aagre´s compositions are compact, stylish and packed with fascinating details..”
www.kulturzeitschrift.at

Jazz Podium (DE): “An album to warm the listeners heart, during the cold winter”. Thomas Volkmann.

ABC Radio (Australia)“Cycle of Silence explains why our Norwegian featured artist wins praise for her ‘special gift of blending the beautiful and haunting with the unexpected and complex.’ Frøy Aagre’s music & her soprano sax sound have an exquisite clarity, but it’s nicely-impossible to detect the line between her composing & her improvising. Each piece tells a particular story”.

Cycle of Silence release date Jan 4th

New album Cycle of Silence release in Norge Jan 4th. Rest of the world Jan 22nd.

«Greatness often lies in compactness. No other country in the world has produced more prolific jazz musicians, at least when compared with the number of its inhabitants.
Frøy Aagre from Tønsberg is one of these rising stars from the land of the Northern Lights, and Cycle of Silence is her ACT debut.
Aagre’s “Nordic Jazz” tells of an expectant calm, sharpened perception and distances which give space to breathe. Her Cycle of Silence sounds calm and dream-like. Her warm saxophone sound and seductive lyricism captivate the listener and fuse naturally with the other members of her wonderful rhythmic group.
The composed and the improvised join to form a harmonious whole. Modern jazz elements are skilfully intertwined with classical music and special guests…

Review Vossajazz (NO) feat. Mathias Eick

«A performance by saxophonist Frøy Aagre and trumpeter Mathias Eick with Andreas Ulvo on piano, Audun Ellingsen on bass and Freddy Wick on drums was a festival highlight. Aagre’s compositions were triumphs of the quietly unexpected, full of subtly shifting moods that ended up at unexpected destinations. The improvisers worked within the mood and melodic parameters established by the compositions, blurring the distinction between the written and the improvised, so that each composition assumed an organic life of its own. Ulvo on piano caught the ear with touches that were quite unique, adding tonal interest that complimented Aagre and Eick’s absorbing lines of musical enquiry». Stuart Nicholson, jazz.com (US)
